About the Directors
Leonard has been a professional in the computer software industry since 1989. He has held many titles including Computer Programmer, Systems Engineer, Software Engineer, Project Lead, Technical Architect and Technical Analyst. But the titles dear to his heart are Author, Playwright, Composer, Director, Teacher and Coach. What he enjoys most is working with students to bring scripts to life in full theatrical productions, and coaching the “small stage” of competitive interpretative speech events for the SALT team. As a Playwright and Composer, Leonard’s original stage productions include The Inn, a full-length musical comedy inspired by the events at Jesus’ birth and set to an eclectic mix 1950’s style original songs, and a set of six classic fairytales retold as one-act plays based on the premise that “Fairytales Happen...when angels make mistakes”. Leonard received a BA in Music Performance, Magna Cum Laude, in 1986 from Metropolitan State College in Denver, with emphasis in trumpet and composition.
Maggie is an original! Her founding efforts helped establish homeschool speech and debate in Colorado and she has been at its core ever since. She discovered a love for forensics in high school and passionately coaches the Speaking As Living Testimonies club with a strong focus on team building and community service. Maggie has been teaching homeschool debate since 1999 and has coached SALT with national and regional recognition. With a background in Early Childhood Development, Maggie is enthusiastic about teaching children of all ages. Her teaching experiences began with many years in childcare, which culminated in founding, building and directing her own childcare business. She expanded her range dramatically when her passion for teaching abruptly moved from preschool to high school students, and everyone in between. She has created curriculum for many courses and has taught classes in pre-school literature, culinary arts for all ages, yearbook, choir, drama, constitutional law, civics, and public speaking. Maggie served as Events Coordinator for the Family Academy of Christian Education and for Training Minds Ministries where she planned events for homeshool children from parties to proms, graduation ceremonies, talent shows, theatrical productions, speech and debate training camps and many other activities for hundreds of students and families. Maggie also has extensive experience in tournament directing and administration, catering, wedding planning and political campaigning.
While “Mr. Leonard” Directs students in theatrical productions, “Miss Maggie” Co-Directs and Produces those shows. While Maggie is coaching her SALT team, Leonard serves as her assistant coach. When Maggie is a Tournament Director you are likely to find Leonard serving as the tournament’s Tabulation Director. Maggie and her husband Leonard have been happily married since 1989 and homeschooled their two sons and two nephews since 1995 through to graduation in Thornton, Colorado. Maggie believes the classroom is a creative setting that must offer opportunities, challenges and success for each student. Every goal is achievable when students are given the right amount of encouragement, inspiration, the appropriate tools, and the freedom to explore in a constructive environment. Maggie and Leonard have experienced this statement’s truth in students of all ages and they continue to use it as the guide to teaching the generations to come.
